Your reaction to mistakes matters more than your coaching points. When a kid misplaces a pass, your body language in the next two seconds sets the tone for the entire session. Eye roll? They'll stop trying. Quick "unlucky, go again"? They'll have another go.
Questions beat instructions. Instead of "you should have passed left," try "what did you see there?" You're building their decision-making — one of the key psychological skills — every time you ask instead of tell.
Praise effort, not just outcomes. "Great idea to try that turn" matters more than "great goal." Goals are partly luck at U9. The decision to attempt something new? That's courage. Reward it.
Let them play. The single biggest thing you can do for the psychological corner is stop over-coaching during games. Let kids make decisions, make mistakes, and figure it out. Your silence is one of the most powerful coaching tools you have.
The kid who won't join in
Every team has one. The kid who hangs around the edge of the session, doesn't want to be in the middle during rondos, always picks the easiest option.
Nine times out of ten, that's a psychological issue, not a technical one. They might be anxious. They might have been shouted at by a previous coach. They might just be having a rough week at school.
Your job isn't to force them into the spotlight. It's to create an environment where they feel safe enough to step into it themselves. That takes time. Sometimes weeks. How to actually track this
